Which version of The Lamb to buy, for a 1st-timer?

Comment from Jon, in Georgia ~
Your passion for Genesis is amazing!
At 39, I've just discovered that I really like Genesis after really listening to "Firth of Fifth" for the first time.
Not knowing a tremendous amount about the group, I began roaming YouTube for music and video of them and found your videos about the live Shrine show.
I decided to buy "The Lamb" on iTunes yesterday and discovered that it is unavailable in the US iTunes store.
I thought, "That's ok, I’ll just buy it at the music store."
It is virtually impossible to buy the album locally so I will be ordering it.
I understand there is a 1994 remastered version and also a 2008 remastered version.
You obviously know this subject well, so I have come for your advice.
If I am looking for the version of the album that is most faithful to the original mix, which should I buy?
I realize you must get many emails from Genesis fans and since time is precious, a very brief reply would be all that I ask of you. I appreciate your time.
Regards,
Jon

Hi, Jon !
Nice to hear from you.....If it were me ( a serious Lamb aficionado ) - I would absolutely plunk down the $$ for the impeccably re-engineered  SACD / DVD double disc set (including new 5.1 and Stereo mixes, by Nick Davis & Tony Banks) - released in November 2008.
It will have everything, and more, you could hope for (including a much better mix on Steve Hackett's sublime lead guitar solos) ...in finding out the "true" layers of the incredibly profound (musically & lyrically) of this unique double concept album.
The original pressing had real problems with the fidelity.
The 1998 improved it, somewhat...but, the complete re-vamping of the work for the SACD is truly superb!
I actually love all the various permutations of The Lamb:  The bootlegs (each very, very different from each other - Liverpool & Rhode Island being among some of the better ones), the original..and my personal fav, of course, (because I love the mature Peter Gabriel's voice just as much as I loved the "twenty-something" one's) - the Archive 1 "restored" version.
The latter is the most difficult to get ahold of...because its been out of print for a number of years.
But, once in a while you can nab a decent used copy of it off of Amazon.
To me - it's a fascinating "hybrid" of many layers of vocal artistry & re-imagined engineering.
Perfect for a technically-trained, production studio fool - like me!  Lol
I imagine it as what it would have sounded like - had Gabriel actually gone ahead with his promise to re-stage and re-tour The Lamb with his Genesis buddies in 2007.  (He re-negg'ed on the deal when he, reportedly, couldn't have sole control over the production ideas....but, who knows what really happened?!  *grin*)Anyway, hope you enjoy...and write back if you have any historical questions, ok?all my best, Lil

I absolutley love everything you do on GENESIS.When i came upon one of your very well done videos on you tube,I had to pick up my jaw from the floor. Now I am trying to view everything that you have produced. The LAMB collectively is the most important music in my life. There is something very special in the LAMB.That only LAMB lovers can know.I would love to know which two pieces you might consider your favorite.I know it is hard to choose. Mine are IN THE CAGE. and ANYWAY. Even thogh I might be late on the scene. That won't stop me from becoming one of your biggest fans.

Lil: Hi, Mike !! I'm a big fan of YOURS, too! *grin*

OK....so, you asked me for my two favorite songs in the Lamb. Ga! Why don't you just ask me to cut out my heart,
really shave it..and give it to the Slippermen to play Bocce Ball with it - for that would be easier for me to do, my friend!
*honest laughter*
Right, here goes..... *Lil holds her breath, squeezes her eyes shut in mock pain*
"Anyway"...and.... (roll of drum) "The Lamia" !!!!!

I weep every time I see The Musical Box perform these songs...superimposing Peter's live vocals (which, by now, the
emotional power of which I have memorized down to my cellular-level) over that of Denis'.

How could you escape the soul-piercing penetration of Gabriel lyrics as "..Enrich the soil..not everybody's goal!" and
"Each empty snake-like body floats, Silent Sorrow in Empty Boats" !!!!!!!!! *getting misty-eyed*

Is it not a wonder that we all are drawn so, to this magnificent allegorical/musical masterpiece - so ingrained in the fiber of
who we once were..and still are, upon reflections of the past, in our buried intrinsic personal layers?!

All my understanding Lamb love,
xoxo Lil

*FOR SERIOUS LAMB FANATICS ONLY !!!*

A
n Analysis of the many allegorical layers, written by Peter Gabriel, within the pivotal song "The Chamber of 32 Doors" on the original Lamb Lies Down on Broadway album.

Jungian Archetype Theory, The Power of Myth's Hero's Journey and the Tibetan Book of the Dead provide the framework with which Gabriel wrote of his pending decision to leave Genesis.
Add onto that the visual work of "El Topo" director Alejandro Jodorowsky, as Peter's inspiration - and you have one, very serious surrealistic work of art.

WARNING/ADVISORY:   This trilogy of videos are DEEP (because these metaphysical/psychoanalytical works were what Peter Gabriel had been reading up until the uber-rushed writing of The Lamb)!
Although, he claims the lyrics are flawed - many still consider it a layered work of genius.
Part Surrealism, Part Metaphysical, Part Self Psychoanalytical.

These videos are the result of 2 years of intense research and many contributions by many people (several, quite close to Peter Gabriel & Genesis).

As Tony Robinson wrote for the 1970-1975 Genesis Box Set: "It's a mistake to think of the narrative as only having one meaning because every listener must create their own personal story."
This trilogy's analysis is not set in concrete.  It is meant to elucidate upon the metaphysical texts by which Peter was reaching to obtain his own new pathway (out of the band and into his own solo career, away from "Genesis-the-Big")....as well as start new discussions as to what the album meant to YOU, the listener.
From all of us who collaborated on these videos....ENJOY!!
