Keswick Theatre sighting - at the Musical Box's LLDOB

12/22/2011

Hi, Lil ~Did I see you at a "Musical Box" concert of The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway at the Keswick Theater? Or was it someone who looks like you?

Merv

Lil lights up, as she responds..:

Yes, Merv !  That was ME, at the Keswick (attended both shows, as a matter of fact) Theatre, in Philly!
So sorry to have missed both meeting you and taking a pic, too....as I was doing with anyone who came up and said "hi", after viewing my YouTube vids.
I sent out a message to all my YT subscribers - that if anyone did so - I would hand over a super-secret small Lamb Bootleg surprise (which I personally restored & re-mixed), in return.
Got several folks - at the 7 TMB LLDOB shows I attended (L.A., Phoenix, Boston, Philly & NYC Tribeca) - nabbing those tasty little recorded treats...and I would've loved handing one over to you, too, m'dear - if I'd only known you were there! ;-)
Well, we're just gonna have to do it all over again...once TMB comes back, this way, right?  *enthusiastic smile*
Meanwhile, thanks for writing me to share the experience...and avoid all those "Doktor Dyper, Reformed Snyper"-type dudes til then!  LOL

Selling England...worthy of an Analysis vid?

12/22/2011

Comment from Rob:
Being a long time fan i try to devour everything i can about the band. I know those songs well enough to know some parts had been redone and I heard Tony Banks and Steve Hackett confirm the same in interviews. Your detailed analyses is impressive because i did not realize the retracking was so extensive. Would love to do an album analyses of Selling england by the pound. A very controversial album within the band as to where Peter went too far with certain vocal tracks but one of my favorites.

Reply from Lileigh:
Hi, Rob!
So glad you are enjoying the Analysis series...(makes me grin to know there are others out there who also love to get caught up in the delectable historical & musical minutia of it all ;-)
I, too, was quietly astounded as to how much of Archive had been re-tracked vocally, by Peter...then really happy to know that Steve had gone back into the studio to re-cut the most important highlight solos of the the live Shrine show (since, in addition to the left thumb tendon surgery - I always felt his soaring guitar harmonies to Tony's magnificent BankSynths were consistently lost in the Live..and sometimes, recorded..early mixes).
Whatever surprise I felt over 15 months ago - when I first heard the original King Biscuit Flower Hour live version & compared it with the Archive 1 collection - it thankfully spurred me on to post those first 2 videos (to razz some friends)...and the rest is YouTube history!
It led to my collaboration with Steve and Nick ...which led to more Hackett, Supper's Ready and Cinema Show-focused Analysis vids...which led to The Musical Box and King Crimson (Adrian Belew & Tony Levin) material.
I haven't had this much fun in years, to tell you the truth...  *wink*
As for doing an Analysis video on Selling England By The Pound (on which I adore Phil & Peter's outlandish vocals - especially "Battle of Epping Forest"...remember they shared the same label as Monty Python, in those early days..and Peter, to this day, is capable of superlative vocal-impressions & accents) - I would say I'd be happy to focus on SEBTP...but, with what would I compare?
My main goal has been to de-construct that which has been "restored" by audio engineering & re-mixing magic.
It was meant to be instructive as to how something that was fatally-flawed, abandoned & left mouldering somewhere in a cabinet or tape vault in rural England ..could be re-assembled and remade into an ingenious hybrid work of young & older genius.
Not only that...it was to show that two completely different artistic and corporate musical entities (Genesis/The Farm and Gabriel's Real World Studios) could once again work peaceably together (much like Disney and Warner Bros did with "Who Framed Roger Rabbit") to produce a totally new and wondrous animal.
Selling England has many bootleg recordings, I'm sure...and we have many of the live versions featured on the various collections.  But, I'm not quite aware of Gabriel (or the other members of Genesis) re-tracking any of those released recordings.
And, that is the whole Raison D'etre of my YouTube series.
So, the question would be....what would you like me to technically analyze and compare with SEBTP, in particular?
Are you aware of some audio re-engineering of which I'm not aware?
If so, please elucidate..for I am ALWAYS on the lookout for new material to add, here!  (And, that goes for anyone else following my series, ok?! :-)

Carpet Crawlers...heed their callers...

Fabulous work!

Carpet Crawlers shaped me.
Heard it in the radio, ran to the record store.
Bought the album. Pure magic till this very present day.

Best wishes to you.

Ben

Lileigh responds:

Hey, Ben!

I feel you:  Carpet Crawlers "shaped" me as well....and still does.
I've been listening to it recently, in the car...with the more mature Gabriel singing it.  Fills me with wonder it does.
Then, about a month ago (before I had to bring my mom to the Mayo Clinic)...I was doing a Lamb Fanatics roadtrip to the TMB concert in Boston, with Tom Lord-Alge (re-nowned audio mix engineer ) and he played the version that Peter and Phil co-led on the re-cut, updated 1990's one - on his Challenger's AMAZING sound-system (what else would you expect a Grammy-winner to be listening on, though, eh?  *grin*)...and I wept.   I simply wept.

Btw,  funny side note:   Just saw a "Stickleback" fish being featured on NOVA, tonight, on PBS (a part of the Genome Project)...and I wanted to call in and say "I am NOT donating any money, tonight, for the Pledge Drive - until you can produce The Tickler for me!  LOLOL

Anyway,  all my sincerest thanks for writing in...and sharing your Lamb experience with m

TMB...historically accurate, at least, this tour!!!

WHAT A FANTASTIC JOB YOU HAVE DONE!

I love it. I love seeing anyone as fanatical about Genesis/PG as me. I hit upon them around 1982 or 1983, when I was about 15 myself.

Naturally, I've seen The Musical Box about 4 or 5 times, now, including "Lamb" twice. The first time for Lamb it was pretty much perfect, but the most recent time here in Boston, his mic wasn't up at all for the whole quiet intro of "In the Cage" --- causing all of us to joke that "well, that's probably what it was like in '75!".

If only someone could really do a proper restoration of the concert film.

Anyway, I'm not one for religion but GOD BLESS YOU for your wonderfully detailed work and playful hosting. I'm very impressed!

Lileigh replies:

Hey, Joe ! (bad pun-intended...my apologies to both you and Hendrix!!  LOL)

Yes!  Yes!  I, too, attended the Musical Box's performance of LLDOB, at the Wilbur Theatre in Boston....and, I felt very badly for poor Denis - having to stand on that back right-corner riser, singing the intro to THE most exciting (and well-known) tune of the whole concept album - with no working microphone!  :-(
There were a myriad of technical probs, that night (including the lack of the Lamia's writhing-snake cone which descends then spins around Rael, covered in a white jumpsuit - meant to catch the blacklight glow when it is finally hoisted into the rigging.  Denis had to appear during that song - wearing his black "Nursery Cryme's Musical Box" encore jumpsuit - for the full song ).

But, despite the fact that ..YES! It was much like what the original Genesis had to face, technically, night-in, night-out with all the recalled "glitches"...so it WAS, indeed, "historically accurate" - as you just stated !  *amused guffaw*

Despite these flaws, the concert was a delight to see (it was one of 7 times l got to see the tour, this past Fall...and believe me - the tour was rife with historically-accurate tech problems - from L.A. - all the way to the East Coast...smoothing out considerably by the time I saw them in their dual shows at NYC's Tribeca PAC.  Which was INCREDIBLE - thanks to a promoter-rented, specially boosted sound system - which blew us all to the back wall when Sebastien - Mike Rutherford - hit those amazing bass pedals!!!!!!   *gleeful look, laugh*   Reminded me of the old "Memorex" commercials ;-)

Speaking of Tribeca - it was there that I was able to finish filming my "Vintage Instrument Tour" footage - with the help of Analog Mike Piera (who helps maintain and service all the vintage analog guitar fx pedals seen on stage with Francois - and other musicians)...and 3-time Grammy award-winning audio mix engineer Tom Lord-Alge.
Mike and I (once we get through our heavy Christmas holiday freelance work) - will be crafting a whole new addition to the "Analysis: The Musical Box" video series...which spotlights (in minute detail) the historically-accurate respective musician set-ups that TMB uses to replicate the EXACT instruments which were used in the RECORDING of the Lamb. (Notice I said "Recording"..and not "Touring"...for they actually differed!).
The most fascinating is Hackett's stuff....but, I won't give it all away...
I promise to have it all up by the end of the month...with Analog Mike doing a lot of the collaborative written descriptives to go along with my videos (for the really, really serious fan & interest musician).
Hope you enjoy, too!

all my best to you and yours, this holiday season....

xoxo Lil

Answer from Lil :

It's my pleasure, Brad....
And, as someone who shares the same name as with your lovely wife...AND has a comparable history with The Lamb - it is surely a pleasurable experience to share my enthusiasm for this incredible, masterful piece of musical history.
All my best to you and Leigh,

A gifted drummer like Bill Bruford, writes in...

hello--
how refreshing and unusual to see a female that likes progressive rock music from the early days.
i am a 61 year old professinal drummer here in north carolina. i
have a playing style thats a cross between bill bruford and allan white of YES.
i sure wish i had a member of the opposite sex that lived near me that liked that type of music as much as you do.
take care-----steve morgan rocky mount, n.c.

Lil smiles broadly, as she replies:

Gee, Steve....have the women in North Carolina got no (good) taste in music, at all !?!
*sigh*
It seems that we (women with any common sense - and a fine-tuned ear to go with it) - are few and far between, eh?  *humorously arched eyebrow, conspiratorial wink*
Seriously, I wish I could clone myself - just so all you wonderfully gifted (in taste and in talent) guys could actually have someone to go to Prog concerts with..and discuss, ad infinitum, all the intricate details of asymmetrical rhythms & allegorically-steeped lyrics of the top groups of our favorite era.
I guess I'll just have to be here, in cyber-space, to provide that service, then...hmmmm?  *wise-acre grin*

Keep up those finely-honed triplets and drum-fills, ok, m'dear?  Wish I could be there to hear you play like Bruford...CHIT!!!
(Lileigh swoons...thinking of his work with King Crimson - specifically on "Discipline" - her favorite album & concert of 1981 !!)

Happy Holidays to you and yours...

xoxo Lil

An Argentinian Tango, Lil-style....

12/21/2011

Dear Lil,

I live in Argentina and our lives seem to have things in common.
I was born July 16th 1960 and in 1975 I heard Watcher of the Skies for the first time.
Since then Ive been a devoted Genesis Gabriel fan.
So much that in 1985 with some friends we formed a "tribute" band called "Rael".
We were very amateur but we somehow expressed our passion, and we attracted a lot of Genesis fans and it was something new at that moment.
There are some bad quality videos in You Tube.
I dont know why,but we ended playing in the most important theatres in Buenos Aires and we toured Argentina until 1991.
Now,after 20 years we started again, with different bassist and guitarist, under a different name,Genetics (ex Rael) and the passion is still intact!!.
In YT you can see some images of our first gig one month ago in front of 900 Genesis fans.
Sorry to bore you with all this history...
I just want to thank you for all this enormous piece of passionate work that youve done for us Genesis admirers.
When I watch it I can feel your enthusiasm and generosity.
Hope we can keep in touch.

Love
Nacho

Lil answers:

Greetings to exciting Argentina (from enchanting Arizona), Nacho !  :-)
What a fun thing it is to know that Genesis lives still...but, in the form of the many talented musicians who dedicate themselves to keeping the Live music of our favorite band going - for the many adoring fans (like me) still out there!
How wondrous that you are one of those talented musicians (much like the member of The Musical Box - who I was just able to see perform The Lamb SEVEN times, starting in October!).
Like you, I was born in 1975...and after listening (and owning) all the early albums of Genesis (Gabriel and Hackett eras) - I don't think I quite realized how difficult and intricate the music is to perform live - until you actually SEE someone try to do it!
I have the utmost respect for any musicians (professional or not) - who take on the work of Banks, Collins, Gabriel, Hackett and Rutherford...I really do.  *solemn nod*
Even watching such an esteemed tribute band as The Musical Box - you can witness the technical prowess required by even the best musical technicians.
I send all my kudos and best wishes to you (and your fellow players) on your newest Genesis Tribute venture...and know that it is NEVER a bore to hear of the history of other devoted Genesis fans, as are we!

With much love,
xoxo Lil

Mexico City..loves Gabriel and Genesis, too...

Hi, I've been watching your videos and I like knowing that there are people who like Genesis like me.
I knew the album The Lamb... in 1994, twenty years after its release and I know every sound from each of the songs.
I love Anyway and The Lamia, as you can see in my email address.
Next week I go to see Peter in concert here in Mexico City and I think the band is still alive.
Yes, I like other groups, new and old, but I always heard something from time Selling England , Foxtrot or another album. Thank you for your analysis, I will continue watching.
Greetings from a fan of Genesis from Mexico.

Martin

Reply from Lil:

Hola, Martin !
I was so happy to get your message from Mexico..and to learn there are devoted fans of Peter Gabriel and Genesis, there, too!
I am answering this e-mail quite a bit of time after you got to see Peter and his New Blood Orchestra perform in Mexico City.
Did you enjoy it (as much as I did, in Saratoga, NY - back in June of this year)?
I loved, loved the power of the full orchestra and the electronic boards & video accompaniments which visually framed his concert performance, on stage!
Did he speak many of his introductions of the songs - in Spanish?
Please let me know, ok?
Gracias, mi amigo ....
xoxo Lil

Pretty Amazing Fan !!

Hi Lileigh,
Just thought I would drop you a line to say hello, and congratulate you on your presentations on youtube of my favorite all time band Genesis!
I live in New Zealand, but I have family in Manchester, England, and timed a trip over to Manchester to visit my Mum, Brother, and family in 2007,, and went to see my favorite band at my favorite stadium, (Old Trafford), on 07/07/07!
It was an amazing concert, with a very vocal crowd, and it was great to hear Phil belt out a few of the "older" Genesis songs, and the whole band sounded just awesome!
A once in a lifetime experience for me especially since I live so far away!
Keep up your excellent work, looking at your resume you are a pretty amazing lady!

All the best,
Steve

Hi, Steve ~
To have been able to catch Genesis during their very last concert tour - a famed, singular Reunion Tour, at that - in Old Trafford must have been a gift-beyond-price to a fellow fanatical fan such as yourself, m'dear!  (I am most envious - as I had to miss that final run of theirs..for reasons I cannot divulge.)
But, in hearing all my devoted Phil, Tony & Mike-following friends and seeing it on video...it was visually F-A-N-T-A-S-T-I-C, it seems.
I envy all who got to witness the last vestiges of the original crew...and am pleased they were able to get it all together despite the fact that Peter pulled out of the original concept of touring The Lamb with them (discussed in 2004).
I'm so sorry that Phil has officially retired - being in such physical pain, still, due to his degenerative nerve problems.  What a key individual and musician he was to keep on trying to physically meet the demands of the gig - during that time!

On another note,  you are very, very kind to compliment me on all my life's accomplishments ...or even to have read them, at all !  *pleased blush*
In addition to being an early-Genesis-loving audio engineer, director & on-air talent...it is true that I am a degreed meteorologist & FAA commercially-rated helicopter pilot (though now retired).
Some folks would say "Renaissance Woman"....
I'd say "someone who had too much time on their hands and who was the runt-of-the-litter of a seriously over-achieving family !!"  LOLOLOL
Anyway (pun absolutely intended),  I truly appreciate both your lovely words..and the time it took to cyber-pen them to me!
Hoping you and yours have the happiest of holidays,

xoxo Lil

Comment from Andreu:
I discovered you today, with the Steve's solo on Firth of fifth , i can only say ....I think I fell in love.
Greetings from Barcelona.

Lileigh replies:

*appreciative grin*  How can one not fall in love - when listening to the majestic "sirens call" of Steve's magical guitar, hmmm, Andreu?!
I hope to travel one day to Barcelona...I've been told (by family members who have visited) that it is a very vibrant city - filled with people who love life (and good music).
Perhaps, we shall meet one day by the sea of your fair city and compare notes on what makes this one of Steve's greatest aural reaches into our respective, communal souls!
All my best to you and all your Genesis-loving friends in sunny Spain (from my sunny state of Arizona, USA! ;-)
Love,  Lil

*FOR SERIOUS LAMB FANATICS ONLY !!!*

A
n Analysis of the many allegorical layers, written by Peter Gabriel, within the pivotal song "The Chamber of 32 Doors" on the original Lamb Lies Down on Broadway album.

Jungian Archetype Theory, The Power of Myth's Hero's Journey and the Tibetan Book of the Dead provide the framework with which Gabriel wrote of his pending decision to leave Genesis.
Add onto that the visual work of "El Topo" director Alejandro Jodorowsky, as Peter's inspiration - and you have one, very serious surrealistic work of art.

WARNING/ADVISORY:   This trilogy of videos are DEEP (because these metaphysical/psychoanalytical works were what Peter Gabriel had been reading up until the uber-rushed writing of The Lamb)!
Although, he claims the lyrics are flawed - many still consider it a layered work of genius.
Part Surrealism, Part Metaphysical, Part Self Psychoanalytical.

These videos are the result of 2 years of intense research and many contributions by many people (several, quite close to Peter Gabriel & Genesis).

As Tony Robinson wrote for the 1970-1975 Genesis Box Set: "It's a mistake to think of the narrative as only having one meaning because every listener must create their own personal story."
This trilogy's analysis is not set in concrete.  It is meant to elucidate upon the metaphysical texts by which Peter was reaching to obtain his own new pathway (out of the band and into his own solo career, away from "Genesis-the-Big")....as well as start new discussions as to what the album meant to YOU, the listener.
From all of us who collaborated on these videos....ENJOY!!
