Hi LiLeigh!

Just wanted to say I have enjoyed your very professional cross-sections of the studio-side of Genesis. I also have been a fanatic since I was about 10 (1981) and have written some annotations to Supper's Ready here:

http://lyrics.wikia.com/Genesis:Supper%27s_Ready/Annotated

There are some other ones too on the same site - I think the Musical Box one is up to par. I hope you enjoy them! It is so wonderful to see someone like myself so obviously enraptured by the brilliance of Genesis and related!

Cheers!

-Kris

Reply from Lileigh ~

WOW!  WOW !  WOW !

Ok, I admit it...I have been BESTED, here, Kris!

I clicked on your wikia-lyrics link...and was blown-away by the depth of research and the quality of the annotative writings - detailing Peter (and Tony, Mike, Phil & Steve's) lyrics on the full 23-minute "Supper's Ready".

I highly recommend it to anyone and everyone who love this mesmerizing piece of early-Genesis' recorded music!

I would like to humbly put forth the suggestion that the "special fire" of the G.E.S.M. - is actually Nuclear War (as I denoted in my video piece).
Consider this:   that the "Lie of Peace" is actually Peter referring to growing up within the so-called Nuclear Deterrence Age . The lie that we are all safer by possessing a larger threat to that of our enemies.

Coercive credibility (from Wiki):
A political superpower must demonstrate the capacity "to hurt another state and use it as a motivating factor for other states to avoid it and influence another state's behaviour. In order to be coercive or deter another state, violence has to be anticipated and avoidable by accommodation. It can therefore be summarised that the use of the power to hurt as bargaining power is the foundation of deterrence theory, and is most successful when it is held in reserve."
But, what happens when there is (as there has been demonstrably shown, in the past decade) a overrunning proliferation of nuclear weapons/material - falling into the hands of or being manufactured by errant, uncontrollable governments (Currently: Iran, North Korea, Pakistan, etc)..who do not have the inclination to "hold it in reserve".
This is where the "Lie" comes in to play, in my opinion, of the personal belief on which Gabriel was elucidating.
He was likely pointing to the high possibility of future diplomatic misunderstandings (and/or opposing political ideologies) leading to escalating mutual perceptions of threat, and a subsequent arms race elevating the risk of actual war (as in favorite movies like Dr. Strangelove).
That nuclear weapons did not automatically and forever equal guaranteed peace.

The Lyrics to G.E.S.M. ..and LiLeigh's extra interpretations:

You, can't you see he's fooled you all.      *The Super Power Gov'ts who created & signed off of Nuclear Deterrence
Yes, he's here again, can't you see he's fooled you all.  *The repeated errors of the Cold War Age - proxy wars, stockpiling etc
Share his peace,    *the uneasy balance of power between the U.S. & the Soviet Union
Sign the lease.      *through the clear capability of both parties' Mutual Assured Destruction (MAD)
He's a supersonic scientist,    *Dr. Robert Oppenheimer and the Manhattan Project reference, perhaps?
He's the guaranteed eternal sanctuary man.   *Leaders of SuperPower Governments
Look, look into my mouth he cries,    *The place from whence political mistruths and misdirection springs forth
And all the children lost down many paths,     *We, the people (children), who innocently & trustingly follow said leaders
I bet my life you'll walk inside  *We are the one's who will inevitably "walk inside" the fire of the atomic bomb, hand-in-hand
Hand in hand,  * versus our Leaders as they take refuge inside such subterranean military/gov't bomb shelter structures
gland in gland   *remember, that when radioactive fallout/exposure is absorbed, by humans - it affects the Thyroid gland.
With a spoonful of miracle,  *radioactive iodine can be blocked from absorption by replacing it with Potassium Iodide - often
He's the guaranteed eternal sanctuary man. *reg handed out by the Gov't in the '50's in the form of liquid or pills, to its citizens.

We will rock you, rock you little snake,  *to hold the Atomic Bomb key to the Age of Nuclear War is, indeed, holding the Snake
We will keep you snug and warm   *who resides in our more modern Garden of Eden, here on 20th (21st) Century Earth.

Additional Tracks added?

Hi Lil :)

I'm a great fan of Genesis' music, indeed my nickname for musical works is "rael" :) I bought the latest versions of the storical CD's, remastered once again and with a wider stereo effect..I've notice no substancial difference inside "Nursery Cryme", but I've noticed some interessing sound in the others...can you assure me about the fact that the old masters and the old tracks have been just "cleaned" without adding new sounds in the new editing?
Thanx!
rael.

LiLeigh replies:

Ooooo!  Great question, Rael (Tom Drums)!

Ok...I am in a position, right now, to say I honestly have not heard of ANY new additional isolated, "sweetening" backing tracks being added to the STUDIO versions of Genesis re-mastered, original tracks.
But, being the uber-curious audio engineer that I am....I will promise that I will "sniff out" any leads along this excellent investigative line of questioning  (being from TV news background & a rabid Nursery Cryme. et al fan, I must admit I can't help myself ;-)
From that tangent...I need some more information from you (as I would anyone asking this type of question):

WHICH recordings have you detected a discernible difference on - from Nick Davis' upgraded versions.
(I need you to give me the pertinent info on the "Before" stuff you are listening to...and the collection or re-release you have of the "After"- in order to replicate your exact listening experience & the conditions of the upgrade's identifiable  mis-match.

Also, in general, for anyone including you - on ANY Genesis re-formatting:   are you listening to the CD or the DVD re-caputulation?  The stereo re-build, the digitally re-mastered/cleaned up...or the  SACD/5.1 versions?
All of these delineations make a great deal of difference in finding the optimally correct answer - for any artist's older work.

Thus, with Nick's consistent 'next-generation' style of upgrading (of the same product)- it's so important to name off the product of that particular era(s), you own..and are making comparisons with.

Honestly, there are so many superlative choices to what Nick, Tony and others have done to "build a better beast" - as technology speeds by us - the chronological collectives offer a wondrous array of choices (and completely different mixes of the older tracks)...that I need to know exactly WHICH collection or recording to which you are referring - to start my own investigational track.

Capeesh?  *grin*

I cannot promise a swift answer...but, I DO promise a honest answer - if and when I can glean the inside information on something as intricate as ....re-formatting, say,  the Apollo Space Program to adequately service the Int''l Space station (to put it into technological perspective).

Hope this answer is good enough for you, at this point in time - for mutually curious minds.  ;-)

All my thanks,

xo Lil

Isolated tracks stay isolated....

Comment From Kevin ~

I had heard that the instrumentals were complete on the Lamb when Gabriel went in and added the vocals.
Do you know if the original tapes without vocals survived?

Thanks,
Kevin

Reply from Lileigh ~

Yes, Kevin...they do exist in their original forms - isolated in their pure 24-channel masters at Genesis' home studio The Farm.
We now know this from what Sebastien Lamothe, from TMB, said in his interview with me (currently up on YouTube/Vimeo under the keywords: "Analysis The Musical Box Part 2".)
TMB needed to discern what each musician was doing exactly, note-for-note, during each one of the Lamb's songs - in order to do a faithful re-creation of the LLDOB.   Since there were no original music composition sheets ever written out for The Lamb - Tony Banks invited them there to listen & break it down for themselves (with, I would suspect, some MIDI compositional technology).
This means that the original master tracks still exist (which was also obvious from all the digital upgrade work that Nick Davis did with the Lamb, later on).
Thus, if you ran it through a regular recording studio board, using standard signal-path routing & returns....you could mix out Peter's vocal track(s) and you would have the pure thing, instrumentally (BUT - with none of the original Island Studio mix-down or "wetted" effects - I must point out!)
I'm told that Mike Rutherford's son - Harry - now probably has the responsibility for overseeing all those early (and later) master track recordings....and I pray he guards them with every fiber of his being, as I would, be me in his position!  LOLOL

Comment from Dave:
Amazing site.
While wasting time on my computer I decided to do some research on the overdubs that we done for the Genesis Archive. Well, I was totally amazed with what I found here.

It also reminded me how great the old Genesis music is, especially the Lamb. So much so that I immediately when and purchased tickets to see the Musical Box perform the Lamb in Montreal. I've seen them a dozen times and thought that I didn't need to see them anymore. But I realized that we are very fortunate to be able to enjoy their show live today. I'm not so sure that anything like that will exist in 20 years. Perhaps I won't either so better get out and see it while I can!

I too am a huge fanatic. I even placed a copy of the Lamb CD to rest with my late brother when he passed away ten years ago. I figured he should have a copy of the best music with him.

Thanks again!

Dave from Montreal

Reply from Lileigh:
Hi, Dave ~*misty eyes*
First, thank you, thank you..for writing me such a lovely and heartfelt e-message.
What you wrote about your brother hit me solidly, in my heart...and I am so happy you had the foresight to send your brother along, on his long journey, with some of the finest music that our era ever produced.
We buried my older brother, 6 years ago, with his favorite album - Jimi Hendrix' Are You Experienced? - as his aural companion into the Universe. *tears*
I would agree that this would be an auspicious time to take in what The Musical Box has to offer, in terms of the re-staging of The Lamb.As you pointed out, nothing in this world is guaranteed...nor is our time upon it.
Take advantage of enjoying the sweetest fruits, while you still can, I say!
I hope to continue to promulgate/spread that delicious early-Genesis musical vibe - via my Analysis vids...and so appreciate those who write me to spur me on to producing even more.
These supportive e-mails (including yours) get me through the very long, tedious late-night editing & rendering sessions which are required in designing these visual bubbles of Genesis pleasures.  *grin*
Again, thank you so very much for your Canadian warmth...(it floated in over my Adirondack Lake, in perfect timing with the morning sun ;-)

all my best...  xoxo  Lil

Just found your videos about the Lamb on you tube.
Really interesting, beautifully presented (how could they not be!) and can tell how much you love the lamb.
Been a fanatic since a young age, love everything Genesis, King Crimson etc.

Tony

LiLeigh replies:

Hey, Tony ~  So pleased that you like my video presentations on The Lamb.
I must say I had very humble beginnings...but, once I started to have such great (very enthusiastic, supportive) feedback from fellow Prog Rock/early-Genesis followers, like yourself - I knew that I had to "up" my game and its been FUN!!
I got to do a dual interview with King Crimson's Adrian Belew and Tony Levin, 2 weeks ago (in preparation for a mini "Analysis: King Crimson" series...and had an absolute BLAST meeting/talking with them.
Superb musicians and gentlemen, each.  ;-)
I'll make sure to let everyone know when that is coming "down the editing pike", ok?  *exhausted grin*

Comment from Joseph:

Holy cow! I want to marry you (or your clone)!

I've listened to TLLDOB, I dunno, an embarrassing number of times. I go through periods where I don't listen to it often, then I do, and I marvel at it with a new perspective.

I remember when the first CD remaster was released and for the most part it was very similar to the vinyl, and then I was listening to "Silent Sorrow in Empty Boats," of all things, and ... heard a difference in the mix. I thought that was strange.

I have perfect pitch, a bunch of musical training, blah blah, although I am a computer nerd for a living.

I will have to check out your other videos.

Glad to see there are some other Lamb fanatics out there.

-joseph

Reply from Lileigh:

LOL !
Wait, let me go into the next room..and check with my "clone" to see if she's available for a date, dearest Joseph!  *wide grin*

Seriously, though....thank you, thank you for sending me such a delightful set of compliments...and sharing that very similar experience (of hearing it anew with a perspective adjusted by the passing of time and the attendant adding of maturity.)
I think we all can very much relate to that statement, my friend!

As for the re-mastering (to CD from vinyl)...Nick Davis did wonders in separating out and strengthening the individual "dry" tracks of each musician - then re-mixing them to give the track better aural clarity and depth.
Nick's other stuff (which has been treated to the 5.1 processing) it nothing short of astounding, to tell you the truth!  *Lil smacks her lowly broadcast audio engineering forehead in ardent admiration & envy - of skills such as his!*

I hope that you enjoy the other vids in my various Analysis: Genesis series...this website has really allowed me to focus them (in a continuous-track/series form) for all to enjoy them - sequentially.
It's an investment in time, there is no doubt....but, a pleasurable one, I hope!

Take care..and enjoy!
xo Lil
P.S. ~  I am very jealous of your perfect pitch.  *wink*

The School of Lamb...

Comment from John:
I came across your analysis videos on YouTube while looking for some old Genesis concert clips. I've thoroughly enjoyed watching.
Your enthusiasm is contagious and I've learned a lot.
I listened to the Lamb extensively back in the late 70's and then put most music on the shelf for many years while concentrating on work and family.
Now that some of those responsibilities have throttled back I'm rediscovering the Lamb, and indeed the whole Genesis catalog. Now being in my fifties I understand so many things that were completely over my head as a twenty-something.
The Lamb is an education unto itself, and one that takes many years to complete.
Your videos are a required course in that school.
Thanks for pouring your heart into that, for all your hard work, and for the sheer joy of it.
Keep on doing what you're doing.
Many blessings to you!
John

Reply from LiLeigh:

Hi, John...I must say that you've stolen every single word that I was saying, last Fall, when this whole "Analysis: Lamb" series started up (quite by accident 8-)
Life (now that we are into our 50's) has a certain recognizable ebb & flow to it...and, I have heard from many, many of our peers as to how the opportunity of going back to The Lamb (as possible aural "comfort food") has yielded way more than the expected pleasure of just hearing it, again.
At this point, in our common pathway,  I agree that the maturity factor allows the absorption of so much more of the terrific depth of this piece.
It's profundity, reflected in our mid-Life's mirrors, comes across with so much more clarity.

What continually catches me, though, is HOW they (at age 24) could have possibly have had the internal gravitas to write such a layered, allegorical work of a "Hero's Journey" via the healing of unsuspecting dual-personalities.

Many authors say that it is very much an autobiographical work - lyrically - for Peter.
But, I also wonder if he was speaking for a Generation, as well ?  *introspective look*

The generation of "What's in it for Me?" being forced to look hard into the dual-face of ourselves, through the protagonist Rael.
A hard set of choices to be made - at a life-changing crossroads of determining the paths of Self versus Enlightenment.

Do we surrender our "Selves", in order to progress to the next level (by choosing to do a selfless act)?  Or, do we again make the erroneous choices which lead us to repeat (& repeat) our self-centered and spiritually-stultifying circular pathways.

We allow Peter (via Rael) to project his early selfish-turned-later-selfless character development study upon us - with, hopefully, positive internal results.
Life lessons ala Professor Gabriel !  *chuckle*

Esoteric discussions come in waves - when one least expects it, eh?  *wide grin*

Meanwhile, let me please extend to you my sincere gratitude - for both your lovely letter and the time it took to write it to me.

It made my day, I assure you!

All my best,
Lil

From Tom ~

Lil,

Thank you so much for your insight & tech analysis of these Genesis tracks.

As a 3 time Grammy Award Winning Mixing Engineer, I found you to be spot on.

This music has been very dear to me and lives on with the various tours.

I first saw Genesis at the Beacon theater in NYC in 1976 and have not missed a tour since. I was lucky enough to catch the very last Genesis show to date at the Hollywood Bowl in 2007.
But always wished I had a chance to see The Lamb tour. Well, after seeing The Musical Box I feel as if I was there in 1974-1975.

Genesis & Peter Gabriel have had a huge impact on my live as a professional. Their music has been the inspiration for most of my career, and I have had the good fortune to have worked with them over the years.

I enjoyed your videos showing the original Vocal performance vs. the re-recorded vocals of "The Lamb". I thought I was the only one that heard that. Keep up the good work!!!

Hopefully our paths will cross on one of these tours.

Tom

From LiLeigh:

I am more than humbled.....the words "thank you" do not come nearly close enough to express my sincere appreciation for your praise, Tom (as well as your sharing of your incredibly impressive array of memories seeing Genesis perform from '76 to '07)!

I hope to thank you, in person, someday...at one of the upcoming Musical Box LLDOB dates.

Until then, with extreme gratitude...

The Musical Box, North American Tour

From Greg:

Loving listening and watching all your great videos this week as I prepare to see "The Musical Box" in Milwaukee in two nights. Have seen them on two other tours and am so looking forward to seeing them do "the Lamb"..

What did you think of the LA and Phoenix shows?

And the tour continues next year in Europe...

Thanks for the great site.

Greg

LiLeigh:

Hi, Greg~ Thanks so much for checking out by new website...I do so appreciate it!  ;-)
So sorry for the late reply (I was & am still busy, busy editing down all the great interview and on-stage tour, I was treated to in Phoenix, of the vintage instruments video for The Musical Box LLDOB tour).
I hope that your show in Milwaukee went off without a hitch?
I must say, that after editing all these Analysis videos on the Lamb - but never having been able to actually SEE, it in person..finally experiencing it - was extraordinarily pleasing.  *genuine smile*
I was MOST taken by the original slide show - originally curated/collated/supervised by Jeffery Shaw & Theo Botschuyver (along with Peter Gabriel)...as I (not owning the 70-75 Box set) - had never seen it in it's entirety, before.
My resident Genesis historian - Paul Davis - tells me that these two men were/are leading digital/multimedia/staging artists, in their right.  Botscheyver created the "Floyd Pig".
Of course, I'd seen some of the limited subject matter in the historic stills I was given to use in my videos - from Cascais, Portugal...but, to see the alternating mayhem of socio-economic, pop-culture visuals...the continuity of them (profound to humorous to chill-worthy) married to the genius of the music and staging was truly impressive.

The Supernatural Anesthetist (and his Ghetto, Pogo-stick riding persona cracked me up!)

Unfortunately, there were some technical problems both in L.A. and in Phoenix (not big, mind you - but, enough to provide a bump in the road of a live performance, to an uber-attentive crowd:  Slide machine failure *historically-very accurate, actually!*, power hits and a slight disconnect in timing between the new players were noted, in a sympathetic manner, by all of us).
But, no matter...the purposely-anonymous musicians of TMB received a well-deserved standing ovation, at both performances - which was nice to be a part of, so appreciative we all were of their heroic efforts to stage this extremely complex and difficult concept album!
With that being said...when they (and I) make it to the Keswick Theatre, in Philly...then to play Tribeca in NYC - I am hoping that all technical anomalies will be shaken out and all will be smooth presentation to round off my following of the Tour, before it heads to Canada, to end off 2011...then off to Europe in 2012.
All my best wishes to you for a good "Lamb-filled" holiday season, Greg !
xoxo Lil

A message & memory from Central America

From Arnoldo ~

I was born in a small town east of El Salvador, I always liked the music, my aunts had a group called The Beatles, Simon & Garfunkel, Herman's Hermits, ect and I was fine with their vocal harmonies and their music, however I sang "A hard day's night" adapted into Spanish words, which is my native language. When I finished my highschool I went to the capital of the country to continue my studies in college, there I met Kiss, Led Zeppellin, The Who, etc until 1976 when someone told me that the music I heard was "charranganeo" (I do not know the right words in English) but he was referring about the way on the groups I used to admire, played the guitar (you know heavy metal, noise), one day he invited at his home parents to study and showed me his LP collection, he took from the pile a couple of LP and I noticed on the cover of the first one said "Yes", the album: The yessong's and the other one GENESIS, the album: The lamb lies down on Broadway, by those years I hardly could keep a conversation and just knew a couple of words english, enough to understand the music I used to hear, with this music even reading the lyrics damn it! What the hell, I didn't understand, so I'd have find out what these people sang, becouse of the complex lyrics, maybe I'm not a full english speaker, but now I know what they sang. Now I'm a fan of Rael story and of course of Peter. My friend's name is Isaac Rodas, thank you wherever you are. One more thing until, even now I still dreaming to have a mixer equipment, maybe not professional like yours but somehow similar. Thanks.

Lileigh:
What a fascinating story, recounting your introduction to the music of Genesis - and the very complex, allegorical double-concept album of "The Lamb", Arnoldo...
I can't imagine what it would be like to be a nearly non-english speaker trying to decipher such difficult subject matter and obtuse lyrics ala Peter Gabriel (where even we "english-speakers" are continually trying to unravel its puzzle-within-a-puzzle metaphorical mysteries, to this day)!
I join you in saying "Isaac Rodas...thank you wherever you are!"  *appreciative grin*
Thank you for sharing your story with us, all the way from Central America, my friend!

*FOR SERIOUS LAMB FANATICS ONLY !!!*

A
n Analysis of the many allegorical layers, written by Peter Gabriel, within the pivotal song "The Chamber of 32 Doors" on the original Lamb Lies Down on Broadway album.

Jungian Archetype Theory, The Power of Myth's Hero's Journey and the Tibetan Book of the Dead provide the framework with which Gabriel wrote of his pending decision to leave Genesis.
Add onto that the visual work of "El Topo" director Alejandro Jodorowsky, as Peter's inspiration - and you have one, very serious surrealistic work of art.

WARNING/ADVISORY:   This trilogy of videos are DEEP (because these metaphysical/psychoanalytical works were what Peter Gabriel had been reading up until the uber-rushed writing of The Lamb)!
Although, he claims the lyrics are flawed - many still consider it a layered work of genius.
Part Surrealism, Part Metaphysical, Part Self Psychoanalytical.

These videos are the result of 2 years of intense research and many contributions by many people (several, quite close to Peter Gabriel & Genesis).

As Tony Robinson wrote for the 1970-1975 Genesis Box Set: "It's a mistake to think of the narrative as only having one meaning because every listener must create their own personal story."
This trilogy's analysis is not set in concrete.  It is meant to elucidate upon the metaphysical texts by which Peter was reaching to obtain his own new pathway (out of the band and into his own solo career, away from "Genesis-the-Big")....as well as start new discussions as to what the album meant to YOU, the listener.
From all of us who collaborated on these videos....ENJOY!!
